World News@lemmy.world•Trump threatens Russia with tariffs while unveiling new Ukraine weapons planEnglish
171·5 months agoThat last paragraph concerns me. Europe ships its Patriot missiles first before the US supplies more. It wouldn’t surprise me that by then Trump will change his mind and not supply the replacement Patriots resulting in leaving the door open for Putin.

World News@lemmy.world•Exclusive: China auto industry inflates sales by exporting new cars as 'used'English
141·6 months agoFor decades Ford Europe has had an employee scheme whereby they can get brand new hugely discounted cars every few months. This extended to their families and friends. Each employee could request several vouchers from Ford which are then used at a Ford dealership in exchange for a car on incredibly good finance payments. This was designed to boost the number of registered cars straight from the assembly line.

World News@lemmy.world•Why the centre will not holdEnglish
4·8 months agoWhen Emmanuel Macron beat Marine Le Pen handsomely to reclaim the French presidency in 2022, the liberal establishment was in ecstasy. Their verdict that the centre was holding was as understandable as it was unfounded. In reality, Macron’s second term helped the ultra-Right become France’s strongest political force. Last week, Mark Carney and Anthony Albanese defeated their Trumpish opponents to retain the prime ministerships of Canada and Australia, respectively. Once again, news of the revival of the political centre may prove a centrist delusion.

World News@lemmy.world•Schooled by Trump, Americans are learning to dislike their alliesEnglish
34·9 months agoPRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP repeatedly claims that the European Union was “formed in order to screw the United States”. Canada, America’s northern neighbour and second-largest trading partner, is “one of the nastiest countries”. Russia was “doing what anyone would do” when it bombed Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during a pause in American intelligence sharing. Our polling with YouGov shows how this rhetoric is reshaping people’s opinions about their countries’ allies.
