You should be able to. There is an “import from zip” option when creating a new instance

Is it a pre made modpack from curse forge or one they made himself? If it is the first, there should be an option when adding a new instance to download a modpack from curseforge or modrinth.

If it’s the second, ask them to send the modlist and add the mods manually. You can do that by pressing “edit” on your modded instance, going to mods on the left, pressing “download mods” on the right and searching for all the mods in their modlist. Make sure when you create the instance you select “vanilla” instead of curseforge and select the forge modloader at the bottom of the menu instead.
