I am surpringly annoyed about Americans somehow finding a way to make this about themselves

Me too, bud. Me. Too. Alas, there is no escaping them for me. I do wish more Americans could travel abroad and see the world beyond our borders. I would wager fewer than 20% of Americans have been 50 miles from our borders and it can lead to a pretty insular world view.

For the time he had, the distance he brought the Church is pretty impressive. I will go to my grave believing that organized religion does more harm than good, nothing they ever do will change my mind. That said, he really was an agent for positive change, especially compared to Darth Benedict, who preceded him.

  • If that is the case (meaning they are not PLA active duty,) it is not functionally different than the Americans and other nationalities who volunteer for Ukraine.

Obviously (to me, at least) the Chinese and the orcs are on the wrong side of history, but regardless this isnt really “new news” at all. It has been effectively a global war since the first month of this phase of the conflict (started more like 2014 or arguably much earlier.) Call it WW3 or not, all the major players are involved one way or another. I guess it differs primarily in the scope of their involvement.

  • Iirc, Orban blocked some. They are also at least somewhat justifiably concerned about Putin’s nukes.

That said, there were restrictions on spending borrowed money for defense. Annnd why not let the US foot the bill if they were willing? Well this is why.

The US can no longer be trusted as a reliable defense partner, much as it pains me to admit it. I bet there are a lot of F-35 purchasers doing some serious soul-searching right about now. Macron sure seemed pretty (justifiably) smug about being able to offer to extend their nuclear umbrella.
