World News@lemmy.world•More than 350 stars condemn Gaza ‘genocide’ in open letter in time for Cannes openingEnglish
26·7 months agoIt’s not going to stop the genocide, obviously, but would you rather they just shut up and put up with it? Would you rather they supported Israel?
This is a show of solidarity.
The more there are, the more emboldened others are to do it too. The more people condemning genocide, the more likely politicians are to do something about it. Particularly if those people have public followings of their own.
Here’s a documentary on their purge of the left for anyone interested:

World News@lemmy.world•Zelenskyy Says JD Vance Is ‘Somehow Justifying’ Putin’s War In UkraineEnglish
261·8 months agoOn the sixth day of Hate Week, after the processions, the speeches, the shouting, the singing, the banners, the posters, the films, the waxworks, the rolling of drums and squealing of trumpets, the tramp of marching feet, the grinding of the caterpillars of tanks, the roar of massed planes, the booming of guns—after six days of this, when the great orgasm was quivering to its climax and the general hatred of Eurasia had boiled up into such delirium that if the crowd could have got their hands on the 2,000 Eurasian war-criminals who were to be publicly hanged on the last day of the proceedings, they would unquestionably have torn them to pieces—at just this moment it had been announced that Oceania was not after all at war with Eurasia. Oceania was at war with Eastasia. Eurasia was an ally.
There was, of course, no admission that any change had taken place. Merely it became known, with extreme suddenness and everywhere at once, that Eastasia and not Eurasia was the enemy.

In my eyes a mandatory read for anybody opposed to authoritarianism.

Capitalism most certainly has everything to do with this.
Capitalism robs the workers of most of their value and siphons it up to the owners. We then end up with, those who have far far more than they need, and those with not enough.
The internet allows us to communicate and see these injustices easier than ever before and the Arab Spring brought home to those in power just how powerful the internet can be. It is now aggressively being used against us to promote ultra capitalism and fascism in an attempt to prevent communism/socialism proliferating. And frustratingly, so far, it appears to be working.

Europe@feddit.org•Poland pushes for EU to scrap daylight saving timeEnglish
21·9 months agoWhat? Where did I say that?
I’m saying that instead of the entire population having to change every single clock backwards and forwards every year. So that’s children, the sick, retired people, students, workers, unemployed, aristocrats, the fucking lot, everyone. That’s every computer, every clock, every embedded system.
Instead of that, jobs just say come in at 7 - 3 for half the year and 8 - 4 for the other half. Is that really such a difficult concept for them to adopt?

It’s easily defeated and incites the wrath of the populace. It’s dumb to use, especially during a moment of silence for the dead.

231·10 months agoAs Tywin Lannister said “Any man who must say, “I am the King”, is no true king.”
Any man who goes around telling everyone they’re brave, probably isn’t brave. In fact it’s incredibly cringe.
A cringe country full of cringe people who say one thing but do another. Claim to stand for freedom, democracy, and liberty whilst oppressing all of those things both at home and abroad.
Land of the cowards.
That’s how English aristocrats (and aristocrat wannabes) say rugby. Whether that’s what they mean I dunno though
